Contemporary classical music

Quite possibly one of the most well-known and admired string quartets in the world, the Kronos Quartet of San Francisco is already part of the history of the music of the 20th and the 21st centuries. With a career spanning no less than forty-five years, they have played in the best auditoriums on all five continents and they have given thousands of concerts. They have also published more than sixty albums and they have received countless awards. Imbued with a spirit of musical exploration, they endeavour to constantly reinvent the possibilities of a string quartet. Although they specialise in contemporary classical music, their repertoire is highly eclectic to say the least, including as it does both minimalist music and jazz, rock, tango or experimental compositions. More than six hundred pieces have been composed especially for them, by such important artists as Arvo Pärt, John Zorn, Steve Reich, Philip Glass, Roberto Carnevale, Terry Riley and Astor Piazzolla. They have devised a special programme for this open-air concert in Madrid.
