Astronomy / Music

On the 20th of July exactly 50 years ago, Apollo 11 reached the moon, and the next day, Armstrong and Aldrin were the first human beings to ever walk on the lunar surface. A milestone in the history of mankind that we can remember and celebrate in many ways: in terms of the scientific achievement and the technological challenge that it entailed, and in terms of the dream and the metaphor it embodies. As Eva Villaver says: “The moon is present in myths, in religion, in poetry, in science. (…) We can explain the gravity that binds us to it, but we still do not fully understand the fear and emotion that it is able to awaken in us, and both forces are equally powerful”. And that is how we would like to commemorate this day, from the perspectives of science, poetry and music. Because from ancient times, the observation of the sky has been a driving force behind much of human knowledge and, at the same time, much of its poetic creation.

Several people will take part in tonight’s event, including Carlos Briones, a Doctor in Chemical Sciences at the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM) and Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) Tenured Scientist at the Astrobiology Centre, associated to NASA; Eva Villaver, a Doctor in Astrophysics and currently a professor at the UAM, after having worked for NASA and for the European Space Agency; Alexandr Ivánovich Lazutkin, a Russian cosmonaut; Sergey Nikoláievich Samburov, chief specialist at Energia, the Russian aerospace company and President of the Tsiolkovsky Fund; and Telmo Fernández, Director of the Madrid Planetarium. As a common thread, the thousand faces of the moon and the present and future of space exploration.

The music will be courtesy of Galician singer-songwriter Xoel López, who has prepared a unique concert for this day featuring some of his own songs and others he has borrowed, all illuminated by the moon or the idea of travel, those journeys that mark a before and an after. He has promised that he will revisit such songs as Space Oddity, the song David Bowie launched to coincide with Apollo 11’s touchdown on the moon, or the beautiful Tonada de la luna llena, by Venezuela’s Simón Díaz. “It will be our first concert on earth with our feet on the moon”, says Xoel.

Those thrilling images of the arrival of mankind on the moon were seen live on TV in millions of households throughout the world, but perhaps there are people who’d like to see them again on the big screen, or people who’ve never seen them at all...
